How To Make A Bat Box

If you are looking for a way to attract bats to your yard, building a bat box is the perfect solution. Not only do bats help control the insect population, but they also pollinate plants and distribute seeds. In this article, we will show you how to make a bat box step by step.

Materials Needed

To build a bat box, you will need the following materials:

  1. 3/4-inch exterior-grade plywood
  2. Tape measure
  3. Saw
  4. Drill with a 1/4-inch bit
  5. Sandpaper
  6. Nails or screws

Make sure that all of your materials are exterior grade to withstand outdoor weather conditions.

Step 1: Cut the Wood

Using a tape measure and saw, cut two pieces of plywood to 22 inches by 16 inches. These will be the front and back of the bat box. Then, cut two more pieces to 15 inches by 9 inches for the sides.

Cut a piece of plywood to 22 inches by 12 inches for the roof of the bat box. Finally, cut a piece of plywood to 18 inches by 6 inches for the landing platform.

Step 2: Drill Holes

Using a 1/4-inch drill bit, drill several holes on the front and sides of the bat box. These holes will serve as entry points for the bats.

Step 3: Sand the Edges

Using sandpaper, sand the edges of each piece of wood to remove any roughness or splinters. This will also make it easier to assemble the bat box.

Step 4: Assemble the Box

Begin by nailing or screwing the sides to the front and back pieces of the bat box. Then, attach the roof to the top of the box. Finally, attach the landing platform to the bottom of the box.

Step 5: Hang the Bat Box

Find a suitable location to hang the bat box. It should be at least 10 feet off the ground and facing southeast to capture the morning sun.

Step 6: Enjoy Your New Bat Box

It may take some time for bats to discover your new bat box, so be patient. Once they do, you will start to see a decrease in the insect population and an increase in pollination and seed distribution in your yard.
